River of Light returns for 2017
- Sunday, 5th November 2017, 0:00 AM - 0:01 AM
- New Brighton
NEW Brighton and the River Mersey will again host the River of Light fireworks spectacular on Bonfire Night (Sunday, November 5) and event organisers, Wirral Council in partnership with Liverpool City Council, promise a few surprises this year.
The fun begins at 4pm with illuminated street entertainment and UV face painting animating the promenade, followed by fire dancing displays and live music from Bring The Fire Project and the Liver Drummers, who will entertain the crowds until 6pm.
At 6.30pm the fireworks display by Titanium Fireworks - the company behind London’s New Year’s Eve celebrations, Edinburgh’s Hogmanay and displays at the London Olympics and Paralympics - is scheduled to be launched from Fort Perch Rock.
This year’s display will also be complimented by a specially commissioned soundtrack, which will be broadcast to the crowd from key points along New Brighton promenade.
People looking to make a full day of it can also find lots of other things to do in New Brighton in the build up to the big event, including:
• a visit Bubbles World of Play, which is open from 9.30am to 6pm
• take in a film at the Light Cinema
• enjoy the fantastic restaurants and bars (some have extended their opening hours and have special offers - but don't forget to book in advance!)
• drop into the Floral Pavilion, which is open to the public for food and drink until 5.45pm
• enjoy a round of mini golf at Championship Adventure Golf
• enjoy traditional seaside fun at the New Palace and Adventureland
Visitors are advised to wrap up warm and use public transport to and from the resort, as there won't be any extra dedicated parking for the event. Merseyrail is providing extra capacity with additional carriages on their trains, which will run at their usual times.
Wirral Council’s cabinet member for Delivering Differently, Cllr Christine Spriggs, said: ‘Last year’s event was enjoyed by thousands of people and we are confident that this year’s will be even better. After listening to feedback we have arranged for fireworks to be launched to music from right in front of the promenade in New Brighton, which will provide perfect vantage points and make an unmissable display.’
Wirral is also hosting a number of other fireworks displays over the bonfire weekend, including its ever-popular FREE community firework displays on Saturday, November 4, from 6.15pm at:
• Birkenhead Park
• Central Park, Wallasey
• Lingham Park, Moreton
• Leasowe Adventure Playground
• Mersey Park, Tranmere
• Meyer Park, Bebington
• Woodchurch Leisure Centre
