Be in Birkenhead Festival 2017 Hailed a Great Success

Birkenhead First’s free one-day family festival made its return this July, taking over the iconic Hamilton Square to showcase some of Wirral’s best small businesses and provide entertainment for the whole family. 

Despite the inclement weather, an estimated 4,000 people turned up to revel in the atmosphere, browse the excellent local food vendors and watch the kids enjoy an activity packed day in the Grade 1 listed square.

Coinciding with the first week of the summer holidays, the Be in Birkenhead festival’s focus was on providing families with an enjoyable day out with a host of activities to entertain children and adults alike. Highlights included vintage buses from the Wirral Transport Museum, an inflatable Helter Skelter, Punch and Judy show, vintage ice cream vans, a traditional carousel, children’s entertainers, Arts and Crafts and circus workshops and activities by The Magical Circus. All these elements came together to provide a fun, summer carnival atmosphere. 

As well as showcasing many of the fabulous shops and organisations that Birkenhead has to offer, the event gave local businesses a boost by attracting visitors from all over Merseyside into the town and demonstrating that Birkenhead really is a great place to visit.

Wirral Radio hosted fabulous live broadcasts from their new Wirral Radio Stage throughout the day and featured performances from local artists including Josh Store, Wirral Sign Choir and Eliza May all taking to the stage.  

Joe Scarth, Place Shaping Manager at Birkenhead BID said “One of three main priorities of Birkenhead First is to help boost our local economy. We have contacted a number of local businesses who have said footfall and sales are up across the whole town centre. This is the second year that we’ve run this event, we are delighted with the result and are already planning a bigger and better festival next year.”

Paul Griffiths, McDonald's Franchisee and Birkenhead First Steering Group Member said “Despite the weather being rather inclement we were thrilled to see thousands turn out. As a business steering Committee member for the BID it was really pleasing to see such enthusiasm from the public and business support for the event.
Events like this help generate footfall to the town centre and build on the great work already done to create a cleaner and safer Birkenhead. 

Del Willden, Media Executive at Wirral Radio commented further. “We were delighted to be asked to be media partner for the 2017 Be In Birkenhead Summer Festival. This was the second year running, and despite the weather still managed to attract thousands to Hamilton Square. We provided a full day of live, local entertainment which was well received by those in attendance. 
We have worked with Birkenhead First for some time now and can see the positive impact it is having on the area. Events like this one demonstrate their commitment to working for Birkenhead, it’s people and businesses. It has been proven that footfall to local business increases, also giving back a sense of community to people from the area.
