Market Street and Argyle Street- `THE OLD HEART OF BIRKENHEAD`

A joint initiative by Wirral Methodist Housing Association and Forum Creative Enterprises to raise awareness of the diverse shops and businesses in the shopping area of Hamilton Square and increase footfall for those local businesses.

On Wednesday 14th February, local businesses were invited to support the initiative by displaying a homemade heart in their shop window made by a group of local residents.

Members of the local community joined us at 72 Market Street for refreshments and cake and talked about their memories of Market Street  and the local area during World War 2,  and they reminded us of how vitally important a sense of community still is to many residents. Some talked about their own thriving businesses they used to work harmoniously in to serve the community and that there was a little bit of everything on Market Street.

Amy Butterworth said “We were overwhelmed that over 20 organisations, local businesses and local residents in the area got involved in the project by either putting up homemade rag heart in their window or popped into our shop (Just for you) to share a memory or two about the area. What became very clear from the incredible stories shared on the day, is that something very ‘magical’ happens when individuals from all walks of life who care about where they live, work and socialise are kind to each other and give time and look after each other’s families, businesses etc....”

From conversations with the younger generation of residents living locally, it is apparent that people like living in the area, they feel a strong sense of community and want to invest on a personal level. This is what made the ‘Old heart of Birkenhead’ and just by the support shown on the day from the local people, we would like to keep that vibrancy alive and keep events happening and step by step reach that place where the memories are not from old but from doing what we enjoy, being fearless and ‘Making it happen now!’

We would like to thank all the following businesses that supported the `Old Heart of Birkenhead` initiative by displaying a heart made by a local resident in their shop window.
